Australia

     Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the 6th largest country in the world with an estimated population 22.6 million people. Australia has a a very interesting background. It was used to as a penal colony for ships to drop off convicts. There were 160,000 convicts there, both men and women. Living there was hard, especially for prisoners. Women had a hard time living because of constant sexual exploitation. The women were outnumbered five to one compared to the men. By the 1820s, settlers began to move into Australia and in the 1850s, gold was discovered.
